About the Discovery Center
Why a San Gabriel River Discovery Center?
The San Gabriel River Discovery Center project at Whittier Narrows vision: create an accessible community space where residents—youth and adults alike– are welcome to gather, learn about and discuss our changing environment, the natural world and water issues.
The project revitalizes the watershed where the San Gabriel and Rio Hondo Rivers join–a precious piece of land and habitat degraded by highly urbanized environment. It supports eco-education for inland youth. (Most water education facilities are within five miles of the Pacific.) Existing San Gabriel River Discovery Center programs provide students with hands-on access to environmental science and technology skills that open doors to career paths as environmental stewards.
