Whittier Narrows Recreation Area
The San Gabriel River Discovery Center will be located within the much larger Whittier Narrows Recreation Area. An independent but closely related project is a review of the Master Plan for the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area that was most recently updated in 1999. This review is being conducted by eight agencies and cities. The Discovery Center Authority is currently not a participant in this project, but the Authority will closely monitor this project.
A sister agency, the Watershed Conservation Authority is one of the project participants and information about the project is available on its website.
Visioning Whittier Narrows is another website which has information on the project. That website states: “Help plan the future of the Whittier Narrows Recreation Area. A process is under way that will result in conceptual proposals for possible improvements of the Recreation Area. The process will provide information to the Army Corps of Engineers that may be used in a master plan update.”
The Discovery Center will also be an important node in the planned Emerald Necklace chain of parks along the San Gabriel River. View a map of the Emerald Necklace (1 page, 1.3 mb PDF file). The Emerald Necklace plan was conceived by the nonprofit organization Amigos de Los Rio. Its goals are being pursued by the Discovery Center’s sister agencies (Rivers and Mountains Conservancy and Watershed Conservation Authority), as well as cities and other agencies in the area.
